I've got several ARFs to put together this winter, and several PNP Models that need receivers. I use a DX6 and DX9 as my transmitter(s), so I need a DSMX compatible receiver. To date, I've only ever used Spektrum receivers, either simple 4 channel ones, or the AR636 6 Channel that comes with most E-flite planes today. These 6 Channel receivers have SAFE technology that I know "purists" disprove of, but that's how I learned and a flick of a switch is all it takes to turn off. An interesting aspect of the AR636 is that its programmable via a USB or Bluetooth connection. In the case of Bluetooth it makes field changes to setups a breeze.
However, the Spektrum receivers start at US$39.99 for the six channel sport receiver and US$79.99 for the AS3X Version (No Safe) . If you've got several planes to set up, this gets expensive.
I know there are other DSMX compatible receivers out there. I use an Orange receiver as a servo tester, but so far I've been loathe to put one in a plane I want to keep for a while. From an "appearance" point of view they look cheap compared to Spektrum. I have read plenty of positive reviews about Lemon receivers, and I've watched several interesting YouTube videos about the Motion RC re-branded Lemon receivers. Specifically, the compatible Admiral DSMX RX-600SP receiver. This receiver seems to have all the benefits of the Spektrum AS3X receiver, at a fraction of the cost; $US29.00. The reviews are on par with anything I've seen for the comparable Spektrum model.
I'm curious about other flyers experiences. Is Spektrum a must have, or is it something you over pay for? Is a Lemon receiver one that you would put in an airplane you've grown attached to? I'm going to order a couple of the Motion RC receivers today, and use them while building my ARF's, and test them as well as I can before flying season. I would feel a bit more at ease moving away from Spektrum (soley for price reasons - I think they're over priced) if there are recommendations, or reviews from other club members.
